The LAPS story

LAPS Foundation

The LAPS Foundation was founded in 1987 to encourage the next generation of artist printmakers in southern California. 

Foundation Scholarship Grant Awards
Each year printmaking students are encouraged to apply for our Foundation Scholarship Grant Awards. They must submit an application signed by a faculty member from the college they are attending. LAPS student members are eligible. No active regular member of LAPS is eligible for an award. 

It is common for student awardees to remain active in the printmaking community after they have won a student award. LAPS Foundation spent many years fundraising to create a self supporting endowment for the cash grants provided for the Scholarships. 

Past awardees have included many current LAPS members, such as Dirk Hagner, an active LAPS Board member. Each student who receives an award is invited to a special board meeting where they receive their check. Student winners are encouraged to donate a print to the Foundation collection, which in turn supports fundraising. 

The Foundation has a collection of prints that are used in a variety of LAPS fundraising efforts. A patron of LAPS is entitled to choose a print for his/her personal collection as a gift for a patron donation of $150. Patrons receive invitations to attend special patron events as well as all regular LAPS events.

Membership and the Foundation 
All members in good standing of LAPS are members of the Foundation. There is an Executive Board of the Foundation consisting of President, Treasurer, Secretary, the current President of LAPS, and one other. There is at least one annual meeting of the Executive Board, and a financial report is submitted to the Board of LAPS.

Background Information
The LAPS Foundation was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation. It is organized under the Non Profit Public Benefit Corporation Law for charitable purposes, and is not organized for the private gain of any person. [Sec 501c]

The original 1987 Executive Board of LAPS Foundation included Robert W Brown, President. Masha Schweitzer, Treasurer, and Barbara Frankel, Secretary, and Mina Kan President of LAPS.

Born in Redlands, California, Karen is a painter and printmaker who has worked in Los Angeles since l959. Educated at Stanford (BA 1957), Otis (MFA 1959), and UCLA (Painting 1960), her early exhibitions include “Directorʼs Choice” at the Pasadena Art Museum, selected by Thomas Leavitt; “LA and Vicinity,” Los Angeles County Museum of Art; “Current Concerns” at LAICA, curated by Walter Hopps; “Imagination” at LAICA, curated by Llyn Foulkes; “Assemblage and Collage” at LAICA, curated by Hal Glicksman; Grandview Gallery at the Womenʼs Building and “Expo/International” at the Museo del Inah, Oaxaca, Mexico. She has exhibited at the LouWe Gallery, The Brand Library, Boston University, Cal Tech, Cal State Luckman Fine Arts Gallery, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Davis, The Berkeley Art Center, Occidental College, The LA Municipal Art Gallery, The Armory Center for the Arts, the Platt Gallery, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, and many others. In Spring of 2012, she exhibited monotypes with Linda Lyke in a two person exhibit at Century Books, Pasadena, CA. From l977 to 1997 Karen was Artist-in-Residence (CA Arts Council) and Faculty at Pacific Oaks College where she created the Childrenʼs Art Studio, a multidisciplinary teaching studio for 200 children and student-teachers. Over the years, Karen initiated and developed art programs on several campuses, including Westridge School, and Pasadena Alternative School. Among the art spaces she created, “The Art Studio” at Pacific Oaks is documented in Design Over Time (Stine 1994). Karen was included in the 2010 encyclopedia, L.A. Rising: SoCal Art before1980 (Kienholz 2010). 
In order to make a print I will work from my sketches I made of ordinary people in a variety of circumstances as well as drawings from a model or some experience in my life.  My prints are about feelings and states of mood, about dreams and expectations.  Often I express them through the female figure.  I play a roleof narrator and storyteller but I encourage the viewer to approach the piece with his or her unique experience or memory. I enjoy working with relief and intaglio technique as well as monotype.  Frequently I like to combine multiple styles and methods to create my own style. Lately I have explored the art of handmade artists’ books as a flexible medium with a wide range of artistic expression and a creative way how to utilize my prints. 
I choose printmaking as my primary medium. The printmaking process is reminiscent of the relationship between light and shadow. Etching and aquatint help me express my interest in light and shadow by using their rich tones of black and white. The graphic nature of black and white leads me to lines and shapes found in architectural elements. Once I eliminated color from my work, I found myself drawn to the exploration of space itself. My work became about the physicality of three dimensional space.

Gráfica América presents works by artists representing print shops, publishing houses, and artist collectives from throughout the United States, México, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The exhibition celebrates the collaborative spirit of printmaking through historical prints and publications as well as contemporary traditional and experimental works made in collective studios and workshops established by Latin American and Latinx printmakers.

Gráfica América, is organized by the Museum of Latin American Art and is curated by Gabriela Martínez, MOLAA Curator of Education and Rogelio Gutiérrez, Professor of Printmaking at Arizona State University - School of Art.

SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART * PRINTMAKING SUMMIT • April 18 - 20, 2019

Self Help Graphics & Art is proud to host our bi-annual Printmaking Summit April 18-20, 2019 with demonstrations, workshops, panel discussions and artist talks focused on the role printmaking in today’s creative economy for students, emerging artists and skilled national printmakers. Admission to the summit is $25.00 (3-day pass) or $15.00 for students with a valid I.D. (3-day pass).

Participants of this three-day networking and skill-building event will learn about new technologies and green practices in printmaking, participate in demonstrations led by artists and an art exchange program, portfolio reviews, meet art supply vendors, among other activities. The Printmaking Summit’s mission is to build bridges among master printers, emerging and seasoned artists, as well as aspiring youth toward a solid foundation in printmaking.

The Printmaking Summit will conclude on Saturday, April 20, 2019 with an opening reception of Utopia/ Dystopia, a portfolio of fine art prints created in the form of a deck of 52 playing cards. Curated by Artist and Printmaker, Miyo Stevens-Gandara, twenty-six artists were invited to create two cards for the deck to create their interpretation of utopia and dystopia. The deck of cards allows the project to bring many different artists and styles together creating one unified artwork- a full deck, redefining a traditional portfolio. The concept of a deck of cards is intended to reference many things- games of chance, luck, fortune, war, solitude, precarious situations (house of cards), magic, empire, and divination. It serves as a container for many ideas, and each artist has chosen their own direction.

Artists include Pavel Acevedo, Kay Brown, Ada Pullini Brown, Leslie Dolin, Usen Gandara, Miyo Stevens-Gandara (Curator), Luis Genaro Garcia, J. Leigh Garcia, Margaret Griffith, Rogelio Gutierrez, Phung Huynh, Dongeun Lee, Kelvin Lopez, Rosalie Lopez, Sandra Low, Poli Marichal, Álvaro D. Márquez, Dalila Mendez, Wayne Perry, Sandy Rodriguez, Victor Rosas, Marianne Sadowski, Dewey Tafoya, Alex Fridrich-Ward, Christian Salcedo Ward and Andi Xoch.
